New school year, new Jazz venues

August 26, 2015

By Kathy Edwards McFarland

Denton, Texas is a Jazz nexus – a central and most important point or place. Starting with the renown University of North Texas Jazz Studies

Andy's Bar

program, with decades of artists, graduates, composers, directors, researchers and a kick-butt music library, and radiating out in all directions with active musicians, bands and avid (and very hip) listeners.

Being lively and dynamic, Denton Jazz changes with each school year, each listening trend and local venues closing, being bought out, or open for new music formats. Below, you will read more about some of these changes (for the better, no doubt.)

  • Andy’s Bar, on the Square – 122 N Locust St. Every Thursday, 10 pm and Midnight. A rotation of Jazz, Blues and Fusion bands.

This week: Moore’s Code and UFO.

Christopher Walker, Administrative Specialist IV at UNT College of Music, Bassist at Pansy Moon and Sound Engineering at Andy’s Bar, opened this opportunity back in May.

“The Rotation is borne out of a desire I had earlier this year to make our then suffering Thursday weeklies into a great night. At that point in April, Harvest House was just coming online and I saw the opportunity with their initial success to provide a weekly jazz/blues/fusion/etc. in a more intimate setting – albeit a smokey dive. It is Andy’s, after all!

Since May, we’ve had a solid weekly line-up of two acts each week (10 PM & Midnight) that have spanned the breadth of talent in these genres that is found in nearly every nook and cranny of town.

I make it a first-come, first-served method of booking, allowing seasoned vets to work alongside young guns still working stuff out. When two groups on a single tend to diverge greatly on a single night, I may privately step in and guide people to differing dates that make better since for the flow of an evening.

I’m super stoked for this week’s iteration as it will feature two large ensembles in Moore’s Code and UFO.”

Christopher is booking a rotation of Jazz/Blues/Fusion groups to play Thursday nights at Andy’s Bar on the Denton Square.
Two acts/groups per night.
Check-in at 8 PM (just a confirmation that groups are still fully coming in), music starts at 9:45-10; preferably 1.5 hr sets.
No cover at door; musician pay-out is 20% of venue bar tab

Harvest House – 331 E. Hickory St. Beer Garden-Music Venue featuring an eclectic mix of music genres with much of the Jazz idiom woven in.

“At Harvest House, we’ve been cultivating a sustainable community of friends for over a decade. We are a group bound together by our love of MUSIC / ART / FOOD / FRIENDSHIP / GARDENING AND ALL THINGS DENTON.

After years of operating as a renegade venue for house shows, potlucks and festivals, we finally have a space to call our own.

We invite you to join us for a drink and make your self at home in our new garden off the Denton Square.”
