Traditional jazz to out-of-bounds goodies

This is the week that is for music lovers in Denton.

Missed a step yesterday, so this blog post has me working a bit harder … stick with me, dear readers.

I am embracing many out-of-bounds music nuggets, due to their quality and accessibility.

Tonight, Austin-based singer-song writer Danny Malone + Sydney Wright + Velvet Army plays Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial at 7 p.m. – $7.

Also tonight at the west-side espresso and coffee house, The Whitehouse, the corner of Bryan and Scripture, Jeffry Eckels brings Denton

another new Jazz voice in Jessica Curran, 8-10:30 p.m. Joining Jessica will be Matt Young on drums,  Collin Campbell on piano and Horace Bray on guitar! Obviously the show will be inside so get you favorite beverage, a nosh and snuggle down in a comfy chair to enjoy this first-class jazz singer

The UNT Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Conductor David Itkin, performs Kurt Weill – Kleine Dreigroschenmusik, Die Dreigroschenoper (Suite from the “Three Penny Opera”) and Robert Schumann – Symphony No. 2 in C Major, Opus 61 in Murchison Performing Arts Center Winspear Hall at 8 p.m. – $10/8. A live stream is available at: – access 10 minutes prior to event. Admission – $10.00.

Nearby in the University of North Texas Gateway Center, the Seven and Three O’Clock Lab Bands perform, beginning at 9 p.m. – Admission is $4.

Thursday, Nov. 13:

  • Evia Music Showcase featuring Melissa Ratley (, The Mothers, and Victor Gann at Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial at 9 p.m. – $5. Founded in 2012 by internationally recognized guitarist Victor Gann, Evia Music is an independent record company dedicated to helping artists in all styles.

  • Vintage Jazz Society meets at Patterson/Appleton Center for Visual Arts, 400 E. Hickory St., at 9:30 a.m. for discussion, followed by a jam session at 10:30 a.m. – FREE – everyone is welcome
  • UNT Composition Studies Nova Ensemble performs in Voertman Hall at 8 p.m. – FREE.

Nova is the new music ensemble of the University of North Texas. In keeping with its mission to present a diversity of musical, aesthetic, and cultural experiences, Nova’s repertoire ranges from 20th century classics to works that incorporate the latest musical innovations. Students in the ensemble have opportunities to work with faculty and guest composers and are occasionally joined by faculty and guest performers.
