University of North Texas College of Music Jazz Studies

Amazingly the University of North Texas College of Music June calendar, is bereft of the multi-event, every-day roster in May. That does not mean the musicians, alums and staff are taking a break, just that their life experiences have increased with summer festival, tours, workshops and much more.

• Congratulations to recent Jazz Studies master’s graduate and drumset artist Junho Cha, who has just been hired as a full-time professor at Howon University, in Gunsan, South Korea, the country’s top university for applied music study. Junho studied drumset with Professor Ed Soph.

• The UNT Jazz Quartet, which includes Juan Chaves, trumpet, Marcos Merino, piano, Dave Farrell, bass, and Justin Heaverin, drums, plus John Murphy on tenor sax, will play at the University Jazz Festival in Medellín, Colombia in June as part of a 12-day trip to play concerts and offer workshops sponsored by Colombo Americano Medellín.

• UNT alumni Paul Tynan, trumpet, and Aaron Lington, baritone saxophone, have released the CD Bicoastal Collective: Chapter Three, which also features Dan Murphy, piano; Corey Christiansen, guitar; Ashley Summers, bass; and UNT alumnus Jon Deitemyer, drums. You can hear sound clips at the OA2 Label site.

• Josh Hanlon, One O’Clock lab band alum (M.M. ’06), and former adjunct instructor of jazz piano at UNT, has released his debut album on Armored Records (alum Stockton Helbing’s label). (un)knowing features Josh‘s compositions and arrangements, and the playing of Jon Deitemeyer (dr), Brian Mulholland (bs), and Evan Weiss (tpt), all graduates of the program. It is available for download now on iTunes and cdBaby.

• Tyler Mire Big Band featured in Denton Record-Chronicle

Swing, rock or hip-hop — jazz band does it all

The Tyler Mire Big Band gets its turn on the patio at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern on Sunday night.

Mire, a University of North Texas College of Music graduate, honed his performing, composing and arranging chops in the One O’clock Lab Band and under the tutelage of faculty jazz composer and arranger Richard DeRosa. Mire studied trumpet under Jay Saunders.

Mire is the band leader of his namesake ensemble, which got together last year. The group’s repertoire is classic big band music and original tunes — with improvisation and solos.

The group recorded a nine-track album due out next month, thanks to a crowd-sourcing fundraiser.

Mire and musicians put together a record that takes on rock, hip-hop, funk, swing, sambas and ballads. Finely tuned jazz ears will pick up on Mire’s influences — Thad Jones, Count Basie and Maria Schneider, to name a few.

• AMP Trio is Perrin Grace, Addison Frei and Matt Young. They are featured in the June DownBeat Indie Spotlight section and also just posted a promo video on YouTube. Their record was released in March on the Armored Records label led by UNT alum Stockton Helbing.
