September 5, 2012

By Kathy Edwards McFarland

Editor’s Note: Having started up new blog posts recently, using my much better computer operating system (and feeling pretty proud of myself), I completely skipped sending out listings for Tuesday, Sept. 4. Apologies, dear readers and Jazz fans.

Highlights from Tuesday Night Jazz:

Jimi Tunnell (barefoot as always) and Friends were at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St., Denton, playing immaculate Jazz Fusion, from 7-9 p.m.

Special Treat @ Banter Bistro, 219 W. Oak St., Denton: From 6-7:30 p.m., the Guillem Callejón Quartet played Experimental Jazz.

Guillem Callejón i Caussa; was born in Granollers in 1981. He works as a guitarist and composer with both classical and modern music. During his studies he attended Yamaha School, L’Estudi,Escola Combo and Taller de Músics de Barcelona where he studied with Vicens Solsona, Jon Robles, and Joan Monné. He also studied with Daniel Pérez and David Mengual at the Conservatori del Liceu. Callejón attended master classes of prominent musicians such as Jim Hall, Mike Stern, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ralph Towner, David Liebman, and Serge Lazarevitch. His studies also brought him to New York where he studied under Brad Shepik and Jonathan Kreisberg and attended the prestigious University of North Texas. At UNT, where he received lessons from musicians Fred Hamilton, Stefan Karlsson, Lynn Seaton, and Ed Soph, and was involved in the 3 O’clock Lab Band, directed by Brad Leali.

Then Banter Bistro’s September First Tuesday took flight featuring –

Mister Joe & Friends kicked it “old school” with Dixieland(and original tunes) at 8 p.m.

Mister Joe & Friends

At 9 p.m. – Le Not So Hot Klub du Denton changed the tempo with their sweet style of Gypsy Swing.

  • Andy and Teresa Cooper were front and center for this show – Andy, long-time Hot Klub band member, is looking and sounding so much better one year after his stroke. He announced that he will be released from the rehab care facility, be at home and continue therapy as an out-patient. Watch out, people, Andy is wheeling his way around in a new custom wheelchair.
