May 14-19 Denton Jazz Round-up

Always a sweet dilemma – deciding which Live Jazz performances to attend each week. A note of caution, the listed Friday show, Blueblood, teeters on the edge of Jazz, even though much of the band’s music embraces Rhythm & Blues, Rock and straight-ahead Blues.

Monday, May 14:

  • Jazz artist Clark Erickson plays piano tonight from 10 p.m. to Midnight, at The Greenhouse Restaurant, 600 N. Locust, Denton. Clark is a graduate from UNT earning both a Bachelor and Master Degrees in Jazz Studies, and has performed with many groups throughout his career, including as a featured pianist for such artists as Maynard Ferguson and Diane Schuur.

Tuesday, May 15:

  • Jazz Night at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, 115 S. Elm St., Denton,  features the  Gale Cruz Quartet – Smooth, Swing and Latin Jazz. The free music starts at 7 p.m.

  • Rosana Eckert Quintet plays 7-9 the Shops at Highland Villagecourtyard (between Chico’s

    and Italian restaurant Patrizio) at the corner of FM2499 and FM407 in Highland Village in southern Denton County. The series, which runs Tuesday nights through June 26, features award-winning students, faculty and alumni from UNT.

Friday, May 18:

  • Dan’s Silverleaf, 103 Industrial, Denton, proudly presents the Denton Debut of Blueblood – featuring Jon R. Smith, sax; Kenny Traylor, guitar/vocals; Bobby Counts, bass; and Gonzy Trevino, drums – with special guests.
    Showtime: 9 p.m. / Tickets: $10
    Blueblood features guys who have collectively played extensively with Albert Collins, Edgar Winter’s White Trash, Johnny Winter, Johnny Taylor, Buddy Miles and the Forever Fabulous Chicken Hawks. This will be a GREAT show! Not to be missed, according to Dan Mojica, Dan’s Silverleaf co-owner.

Saturday, May 19:

UNT students play Jazz at Banter.

  • Jazz at Banter Bistro, 219 West Oak Street,  Denton, 6-7:45 p.m. Prior to a fun night with Bone Doggie, 8-11 p.m.
  • University of North Texas jazz programs bring a flow of unmeasurable talent through our gates and Banter is so happy to offer these musicians a corner to grace their audiences with their astounding talent. Andy LaViolette heads up a varied line up of bands for Friday and Saturday evenings.
