The skinny on Fat Tuesday @ Sweetwater

February 20, 2012

Friendly Reminder time …

February 21, The Vintage Jazz Society brings its New Orleans-style Dixieland to the annual Sweetwater Grill & Tavern Fat Tuesday Celebration. The group ushered in live jazz at SG&T at the establishment’s Fat Tuesday Celebration in 2005, according to VJS member Joe Pinson. VJS has been the “house band” for Sweetwater’s Mardi Gras event ever since. “It’s the one live performance the Vintage Jazz Society gives each year,” said Pinson.

The music starts at 7 p.m., so if you want to grab a table, come early. The celebration is well known and well attended.

Sweetwater Grill & Tavern is located at 115 S. Elm St. in Denton.

7 p.m. – “Strictly Dixie,” an ensemble of VJS members under the direction of David Hume, kicks off the festivities.

8 p.m. – more Vintage Jazz Society players will take the stage, continuing the New Orleans-style Dixieland.

9 p.m. – Vintage Jazz Society members open the stage for a jam session, offering anyone who wants to play a chance to join in.

It will all be New Orleans-style Dixieland all night.

Comprised of about a dozen players who love the music of the 20’s and 30’s, the Vintage Jazz Society meets on the 1st and 3rd Mondays of each month at the Visual Arts Center, 400 East Hickory Street in Denton, where they have a program and then a jam session.

Vintage Jazz Society members are Doug Almond, C.A. Bell, Thad Bonduris, Andy Cooper, John Cowles, David Hume, Doug Ebersole, Maristella Feustle, Ron Fink, Bill Miller, Joseph Pinson (Mister Joe), Billy Roy, Taylor Sims, Jim Staercke, Tom Teegarden,  Bob & Pat Tolman and Woody & Mary Wood.
