Jimi’s been busy

February 5, 2012

Jimi Tunnell and his quartet, played the Jan 31st Jazz Night at Sweetwater Grill & Tavern, showcasing much of Tunnell’s Jazz-Rock Fusion http://, and offered an opportunity for well-known professional musicians – Bassist Carl Hillman – visit (N’awlins Gumbo Kings), Pete Gallio on sax, and Drummer Dennis Durick, to play on the Patio. (My husband, Steve, likened Tunnell’s guitar sounds to Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson.)

Tunnell and the band led listeners on a journey of discovery, escaping from the routine. Especially when he broke out the soulful “My One and Only,” hitting all the right notes in a falsetto style this low-register alto envied.

(Tunnell had a cold, and sang the night’s only vocal thanks in large part to Sweetwater chef Jimmy Meredith supplying the healing powers of his famous Hot Toddies.)

  • Jimi Tunnell and Trilateral Commission shot some promotion videos January 13, 2012, live at Dan’s Silverleaf.
Visit  and for two of the promo videos made that night. Three of the four artists who played at the Sweetwater Grill &Tavern Jazz Night (see above) are in this group.
Trilateral Commission includes veteran members of the jazz supergroups Steps Ahead and Weather Report – with Jimi Tunnell – guitar and voice, Jose Rossy – percussion, Pete Gallio – sax, Jeff Plant – bass, Dennis Durick – drums, and Tim Gilpin-keyboards

Tunnell plays barefooted ... been doing so for years. Creativity knows no bounds ...

Jimi is a master musician whose diverse talent encompasses many musical styles from Pop and R&B to Jazz and Classical. He is a stunning vocalist and a brilliant guitarist. He’s also a sought-after arranger, composer and producer.

Jimi has performed and recorded with such diverse artists as Carly Simon, Laurie Anderson, The Bee Gees, Arcadia (Duran Duran), C & C Music Factory, Malcolm McClaren, Arthur Baker, Little Louie Vega, Cover Girls, New Kids On The Block, Southside Johnny, Paul Schaffer and Will Lee (David Letterman), Steve Smith (Journey), Hiram Bullock, Teo Macero, Omar Hakim (Sting, Madonna), Dennis Chambers, Victor Bailey (Madonna, Weather Report), Kenny Garret, Mino Cinelu, Tom Coster (Santana), Adam Holzman (Miles Davis) and The Bob Belden Ensemble.

Mr. Tunnell toured extensively in Japan with Yellow Magic Orchestra artist Yukihiro Takahashi. He later succeeded Mike Stern as guitarist for the electric Jazz super group Steps Ahead touring internationally with the band for three years. As the first artist to successfully incorporate vocals into their live concerts, his original compositions were greeted with wild enthusiasm at Jazz Festivals such as North Sea, Montreux, Milan, Paris, etc.
